Project objectives

LOCOMOTION aims to build a new IAM that excels through its robustness, transparency, accessibility, usability and reliability.

A new multi-regional global IAM with 9 global regions and integrating the 27 EU countries. It is a policy-simulation model of very large size, whose core motivation is to capture socioeconomic implications of the energy transition(s) accounting for biophysical constraints, as well as address some key limitations of the IAM field:

  • An often too simplistic representation of the economic preocesses.

  • Absence of very high (renevable and non-renevable) energy potentials.

  • The neglects of metabolic implications of future energy investments (e.g. EROI).

  • Failure to address challenges of 100% renevable systems.

  • Failure to capture tha main interactions between different dimensions (complex system approach).

l

To design an IAM able to answer the following research questions:

  • Which sustainability paradigms and set of policies can help design a sustainable energy transition within the planetary and social boundaries?

  • How can we reach 100% renewables in different countries?

  • What are the monetary, energy and materials investments and/or requirements to achieve the transition to zero carbon economies?

  • Which are the impacts of the energy transition on the economic structures of different countries, different people in society (income, labour, consumption, well-being, etc.) or land uses and products?

  • What are the potential limits to growth that biophysical constraints (energy potentials, critical materials, etc.) may imose to the economy?

A comprehensive IAM that includes modules such as demography, society, economy, finance, energy, materials, land and water, and climate.

An IAM that includes a rich portfolio of conventional and non-conventional policies (e.g. CO2 taxes, basic income, behavioural changes, working time reduction, recycling, etc.) aiming at being able to simulate a broad range of narratives, such as Green Growth, Green Deal and Post-growth/Degrowth.

An IAM that integrates relevant features and functionalities from other models.

The improved usability of the IAMs through the development of graphical user interfaces and a participatory simulation game for educational purposes.

The effective exploitation of the IAMs aimed at three target groups, that are policymakers, concerned citizens and experts in relevant related fields.
